This famous old temple was established in the year 717 by the great monk Taicho, who was the first to climb Mt. Hakusan. The grounds feature a number of remarkable rock formations, along with beautiful spring greenery, autumn colors, and snowy winter scenery. Immortalized in poem by the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho, it’s easy to see why this temple has been nationally designed as a place of scenic beauty.
